Cell Phone for the Blind

Blind people are challenged when using a cell phone as well as most other modern technology as it is designed for people that can see. A new cell phone out on the market can change the cell phone industry for people with impaired vision that want to use a cell phone.

Cingular wireless now has a cell phone that is designed with blind people in mind. They have made a cell phone program called "talks". The cell phone user can use the cell phone by listening to commands for easy cell phone navigation.

They can also listen to text messages as well as such functions as caller id. This feature is great for people that have a hard time seeing the little LCD screen on the cell phone.

Talks software is currently available as an option on the Nokia 6620 cell phone from Cingular wireless. The cool feature that we like is the audio warning for signal strength and for low battery alerts. These features will be such a vast improvement on every other cell phone out there that I am sure it will become standard in a few years. As baby boomers are getting older they have a hard time seeing the little LCD screens on the cell phones themselves. If cell phone companies were smart they would incorporate this in every cell phone in the future. 

This speech software is made by a company called Scansoft and it works by placing a card under the cell phone battery. The card  reads the text message and then plays an audio version of what the text message is saying for the cell phone user to hear. This cell phone has got rave reviews from most of the vision impaired foundations.
